Abstract
In our previous study, it was found that some of bacteria grown on agar medium containing soluble extracts of Fruclose gardeniae(refered to corcin components) producted dark violet pigment around their colonies, and development of the colonies on the medium was slightly enhanced. It was presumed that the corcin components did contain some growth factors for some of bacteria. In the present study, to determine the presence of growth factor in the crocin components, growth curves of bacterial concentration at early stage of exponential growth of Brucella abortus, Bordetella pertussis, Mycobacterium bovis and Propionibacterium acnes in the broth medium were measured in the presence or absence of crocin components. In addition, development of bacterial colonies of rapidly or moderate rapidly growing strains of M. fortuitum-chelonei complex on Middlebrook 7H10 agar medium with or without crocin components was compared. The results are summarized as follows: Bacterial growths of B. abortus and M. bovis in the broth were markedly enhanced by the crocin components, whereas growths of neither P. acnes nor B. pertussis were affected by the crocin components. Development of bacterial colonies of M. fortuitum-chelonei complex on Middlebrook 7H10 agar medium with corcin components were also enhanced. Visible colonies of M. fortuitum-chelonei complex on 7H10 agar medium with corcin components appeared 24 to 48 hr earlier than without crocin components. These results indicated that the crocin components might be of value for the cultivation of some fastidious bacteria in their culture.
